Paul Robeson (1898–1976) was an African-American brass-baritone singer, actor, world-class athlete and human rights activist. A "Renaissance man" of the 20th century, he was one of the most famous Americans of his era. Robeson broke racial barriers by portraying the title roll in William Shakespeare's Othello at the Savoy theatre, London in 1930. His performances are considered a 'National victory for progress' in theatre history. Robeson reprised the role in 1943-44 & in 1959.
